Psalm 30:5b says weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Christmas This Year...
Okay, I'm not going to start singing the TobyMac song of the same name... but this is an appropriate title for this BLOG.
This year unlike any other in my memory and for many others, it has been a very strange and unusual year. The whole thing of Covid-19 and lockdowns, numbers go down, they go back up, more lockdowns and restrictions to try and combat it, and the worst is Christmas this year... it might be very different than we have ever experienced.
The first Christmas saw Joseph and Mary make a trip to Bethlehem while Mary was expecting. Not pleasant at all. There was a census - again not pleasant. And a selfish king who wanted to kill Jesus. Horrific! It was a quiet event with just Mary and Joseph in a stable. Angels did sing to the shepherd, and the shepherds came of course, and the later on the wisemen - but it was a simple and quiet Christmas away from family and friends.
Now think of this Christmas - we might be in lockdown/restriction mode where we can't go see family and friends. It might be a simple and quiet Christmas with just our immediate family. And that's okay...
Today we have what Mary and Joseph didn't have - technology like Zoom and Google meetings and so on to video chat with family and friends that we will miss should we go into new lockdown measures.
Whatever happens, remember that Jesus is the reason for the season, and we celebrate that fact whether in the presence of family and friends or not.
I know it would be such a sad thing to be in lockdown at Christmas. It's not something I want at all. We didn't get to see our family at Thanksgiving already, and I really don't want Christmas to be out too for visiting.
I know whatever happens, Christmas this year is not cancelled - we will still celebrate Jesus' birth one way or another!
God bless!

Covid-19 and God
The world is in a panic mode. Covid-19 has shut down countries, businesses, and more. Economies are falling. People ask in all this: Where is God?
On Ask The Pastor last week (March 17) I had 5 questions all asking the same kinds of things: What is a word of encouragement you can say to those who are very fearful about all that is going on? How is this related to end-times things?

NOTHING can separate us from God's love
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Isn't it good to know that no matter what we face, God won't leave us? Now, this is not to say that we're on cruise control, we never have to stop sinning, etc, but what it does say is that when we do fall, He will be there helping to pick us up, waiting for us to come to Him with open arms.
There is a day coming where Christians of North America will face hardship like the disciples and early church faced, we are starting to see some of that with the laws passed and more. When those times come, or when we are facing severe temptation, God is there to give us the strength to overcome what comes our way, a way out. We just need to take it.
So what will you do when the tough times come? Buckle under the pressure and say what you need to get by? Or will you stand ready to declare the name of Jesus in spite of what man may do?

Be careful making those vows for 2020...
Through Ask The Pastor, I get asked a lot of things, but one that came up lately reminds me as to how we need to think when it comes to vows and things like making those New Year's resolutions for the upcoming decade starting with 2020!
Matthew 5:33 – 37, 33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. So yes, we need to be sure what we say is what we do.
James 1 talks about being an unstable mind unstable in all they do. Living in an unstable mindset always. God cannot use someone who is double-minded in all they do. So someone who sets out making all sorts of promises about how they'll change for the new year and yet nothing has by year-end, what does it say about them? They're considered unstable according to the Bible.
Ecclesiastes 5:4 – 5 says, 4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. 5 It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. Here's the worst, for people making those vows to God at the start of a new year and don't change at all by yearend - if we haven't fulfilled those vows? We've broken our word to God and He takes no pleasure in us. We look foolish in His eyes. God says for us it's better to not make a vow to Him than to make one and break it.
So for 2020, the new year and new decade to come - make it easier on yourself, let your yes be yes and no be no. That's it.
All the best for 2020, may the Lord be with you and bless you, may His light shine upon you now and always.
In Christ,

Drop the blanket
The most famous Charlie Brown special of all time, A Charlie Brown Christmas, is one that holds a surprising spiritual truth. We all know Linus is the one who sheds light on what Christmas is all about in his famous speech as seen in the video, but what I had never thought about before was the implication of one scene until I saw it on Facebook.
Linus drops the blanket.
Now think about it, how many times had he fought his sister and Snoopy and others about this blanket he carried with him? No one had been able to pry it from him. Even when they made his blanket into a sweater for Charlie Brown, he was unfettered in going after it, snuggling up to it while Charlie Brown was wearing it.
In this one scene where he starts talking about the real meaning of Christmas, he drops his blanket as he is emboldened to share the truth of the gospel of Jesus being born to save us. See that? He dropped what was his prize possession to get to the truth and share it.
In life, what are the blankets we hold onto? Position? Wealth? Popularity? Possessions? Something else? Whatever it is, when it comes to God, we need to drop our banket and step into His truth.
A simple reminder from a scene long ago by a famous artist, with truth for today.
Did Chuck Schultz plan it that way? I think so. He didn't hide his faith. So this symbolic gesture of Linus dropping the banket showed how important the announcement of Jesus' birth was to his audience.
I know in my own life I have had to learn to drop the blanket of... fill in the bank... on different occasions. God is teaching us when we come to these life-shattering moments where we have to decide do we drop the blanket or cling on for dear life?
Where are all of us today? What blankets do we need to drop so God can do more in our lives? What prize possession do we need to let go of today?
